Plumbing Design

Plumbing design is the art of working out exactly where certain pipes and fittings need to be in order to provide the maximum performance. This is actually a highly skilled and involving job and equally as important as the manual process of laying the pipes. If the plumbing design is wrong, then quite simply it will not work, this could result in a huge waste of money and effort.

Fortunately there is a worldwide industry standard responsible for vetting plumbing design, this is recognised by an industry wide qualification called, Certified in Plumbing Design or CPD. It is only possible to take this certification once you have established yourself as a skilled plumber and have been awarded or gained all of the available certification available in your country of residence.

The great thing about the Certified in Plumbing Design award is that it is recognised world wide, in fact it is the only plumbing achievement that is accepted in other countries, as both US and European education facilities have different ways of training new plumbers. So if you're already an established plumber and are looking for a new challenge, or perhaps a position abroad, the CPD course might be a great vehicle to open new doors and opportunities.

Plumbing design is not just about knowing about plumbing, it also requires extensive knowledge of planning, and building regulations. You will also need to have excellent management skills, organisational abilities and have a good approach to project management. You'll also be called upon to use a number of different computer systems, much of the plumbing design planning stages now takes place on a laptop at site, so if you're lacking in this area you may want to check out your local college to see what type of computer courses they're running.

The great news is that the great profession of plumbing is finally being recognised for exactly what it is, a highly skilled and rewarding vocation that requires constant topping up of skill levels. Whilst we may not train for as long as Doctors or Dentists or ever be in a position where we are saving lives, we should all be proud that we have all managed to improve the perception and value of plumbers in the last few decades.

A plumbing design professional has reached the pinnacle of the plumbing profession, highly skilled, highly motivated and above all else, completely in love with the world of plumbing. It can take a great number of years and an equal number working in the field to become proficient in plumbing design. However, as a goal it is right up there with the best of them! Plumbing design is not for everyone, think carefully before taking the plunge (An old plumber joke!), if this direction is right for you will have a rewarding and ultimately satisfying career in plumbing.
